Garden Trellis for Climbing Plants

v2 of the trellis for peas and beans

Background

Our bean and pea plants are starting to get tall and lean a bit, and we don't have anything for them to climb. They are dwarf plants so they should not get huge, but we want them to be supported.

Design

I have an enormous amount of sticks in the garden from the many iterations of garden clean-up. I also have twine, wire, and this basic plan. So, we're going to make small trellis to support the climbing peas and beans in the raised potagerie bed.

Implementation

We ended up simplifying the design a bit, as you'll see in the photo. We used some of the many sticks we inherited in the garden and some of our scrap bits of electrical wire to tie it all together.

Less visible in the photos are three horizontal strings running across from end to end, to help keep the peas and beans from flopping too far forward.

Result

It is holding up nicely, and the only change we may make for next season is to do strings for the verticals instead of sticks. We found some snails sneaking up the vertical sticks to get into the peas!
