My poorly tied bow, but it is done and works the way I want it to! |
Background
I've had this market basket that I occasionally use for shopping, but I have been a bit hesitant since it is wicker and I don't want things to drop through the spaces between or get caught in them and destroy the basket. So, I started looking around how difficult it might be to sew a basket liner, and once again, the internet provided a wealth of other people's experiences for me to learn from.
Design
For this liner, I wanted it to lay in the basket body, flop over the edge, be tied or elastic on the outside, have cut-outs for the handles.
Implementation
Starting with a paper real-size model helped a lot. This was how I determined that my market basket liner method was not going to be appropriate for this basket.

The paper "pattern" to make sure this idea would even work. |
 |
The "floor" and "walls" from the pattern, now in fabric. |
 |
Adding the top flop. |
 |
Checking that my ribbon will work as a bias tape and look good. |
Result
I have been using the basket with its new liner for a few months, and I love it. Things no longer fall through, nor get caught on the wicker. Plus, it helps my basket stand out a bit in a village or very plain market baskets.
