Seedling greenhouse

Background

We started some seedlings under a grow light indoors since the weather wasn’t yet great for planting outdoors yet. As it warmed up, we wanted something to protect the wee plants from getting baked in the sun, but would let them enjoy the same humid environment of our germination chamber, while taking advantage of our nicer weather.

Design

I knew I wanted it to be self supporting, be able to be dropped over the seedling trays, and be able to support the plastic I wanted to drape on it. I also had a goal of making this with items we already had around the house. So with this rough sketch in hand, I sat down with my bag of left over electrical conduit and fittings to try to come up with this basic shape out of what we already had.
Most of my projects start this way: with a terrible hand-drawn sketch.

Implementation

After measuring a few pieces against each other, I determined I did have enough of the scrap conduit pieces and fittings to put this together! This is a 20mm diameter tube meant to be electrical conduit in damp spaces, and the associated connectors. Living in a renovation project has to have some perks. We're done with the electrical work, so this rigid piping was just begging for a re-use. I was missing two 90° bends in the end, so I substituted them with some Ts I had, and this worked out fine. I got to evening up the pieces with my broken pipe-cutter.

Result
