The garden was a mess when we arrived. |
Background
Our property has a small south-facing garden, bordered on 3 sides by high walls. So, if we want to be able to grow any of our own vegetables, and have useful private space outdoors, we need to have a good plan for the space. At one point there was a high wall on the south end, too, but a tree (the nemesis tree) pushed the wall out into the public space and the previous owner was obliged to knock it in for public safety. We have gained planning permission to rebuild the wall, but we must remain within the local aesthetic because we are within 500m of a historic monument.
Design
As usual, it all starts with my always slightly off-scale sketch (this time it was what I had done in SketchUp) and tries to incorporate all the elements we want to have. It might look ambitious, but we're not scared to try. The goal is to use as much of the recovered stones and existing building materials that we inherited with the property as we possibly can. The space is approximately 3m x 6m, so there's a fair amount of space to work with.
